An Experimental Analysis of Microcrack Generation during Hydraulic Fracturing of Shale

چکیده
Hydraulic fracturing is commonly applied in the shale gas exploitation industry. However, mechanical mechanism of permeability under has so far been unclear. In this study, an analysis laboratory experiments on hydraulic fracture propagation and bedding plane reactivation presented. To investigate microcrack occurrence fracturing, several small slices were collected from surface scanned with a scanning electron microscope (SEM). It was found that observed microscopic microcracks could not be produced by fluid pressure as latter generated compressive stresses at site microcracks. Rather, tensile stress concentration front propagating fracture. This implies caused along plane. An lengths showed exhibited anisotropy toughness resistance to parallel planes being twice compared direction normal planes.

Experimental Investigation of Crack Extension Patterns in Hydraulic Fracturing with Shale, Sandstone and Granite Cores
Hydraulic fracturing is an important method of reservoir stimulation in the exploitation of geothermal resources, and conventional and unconventional oil and gas resources. In this article, hydraulic fracturing experiments with shale, sandstone cores (from southern Sichuan Basin), and granite cores (from Inner Mongolia) were conducted to investigate the different hydraulic fracture extension pa...
متن کاملEnergy Analysis of Hydraulic Fracturing
In this paper, numerical simulations of circular boreholes under internal hydraulic pressure are carried out to investigate the energy transferred to the surrounding rock and the breakdown pressure. The simulations are conducted by using a micromechanical continuum damage model proposed by Golshani et al. (2006). The simulation results suggest that the borehole breakdown pressure and the energy...

In this paper, configurations of pre-existing fractures in cubic rock blocks were investigated and reconstructed for the modeling of experimental hydraulic fracturing. The fluid-rock coupling process of hydraulic fracturing was simulated based on the displacement discontinuities method. The numerical model was validated against the related laboratory experiments. The stimulated fracture configu...
